Hallstein Nilson Haugveie (1796-1891)

Hallstein Nilson Haugveie was born very late in 1796 in Hemsedal, Buskerud, Norway as the third child of Nils Ivarson and Jørønd Gudtormsdtr Eikre.  He had two siblings, namely: Ivar, and Gudtorm.

The exact date of his birth is not known, but Hallstein Nilson Haugveie likely was born in December. Baptisms normally happened very shortly after the birth of a baby. He was baptized on 06 Jan 1797 in Nes i Hallingdal, Buskerud, Norway.

I should have probably held this post until next December, so that it would come closer to his probable birthday. But after a six-day stretch of 90-degree plus temperatures here in Minnesota during late May, there was something refreshing about thinking about a December birth.

At the time of the 1801 Census, the family was living on the Haug farm. Later they lived on the Høltø farm.

Hallstein got to take over farming from his father and brother on the Høltø farm for a while. It was a small farm north of Hemsedal in Buskerud County, Norway.

Etter Ivar tok Hallstein, farbror hans, styret i Høltø. Han vart g 1826 m Ingerid Torleivsdtr Imré f 1796: Jørgen 1826 d, Gudtorm 1829, Nils 1831, Jørørnd 1833 d, Jørørnd 1834, Kari 1836, Kari 1838, Ingerid 1842 d. Huslyden rtA 1860.¹

Eventually, however, Hallstein and his wife came to America. The exact date of their immigration is not known, but they may have been residing in Winona, Winona, Minnesota, at the time of the 1860 Federal Census and were definitely in Westfield, Dodge, Minnesota by 1870. He was recorded then as Hillson Nelson. It is interesting that his son and wife were recorded in different households than him. Guttorm and his family were in one household. Hillson was alone in another, and Ingerid, recorded as Ingra, was living with a separate family. Hallstein didn’t own any real estate. That may be because he didn’t immigrate until later in life.

Five years later, Halstein and Ingerid were living with their son and his family. They were all still in Westfield Township, Dodge County, Minnesota.

Five more years later, in 1880, Halstein and Ingerid lived alone in their own residence and were recorded as such in the census.

Hallstein and Ingerid attended First Lutheran Church in Blooming Prairie, Minnesota.

As we’ve seen with other ancestors, his name has been spelled a variety of ways through his life. He was called Hallstein Nilson Haugveie, Halsten Nelson, Halsteen Nilsen, Helsten Nielsen, and probably a bunch of other things. The Haugveie surname was only used for a while when he lived in Norway. Even there, his name changed to Hallstein Nilson Høltø when he lived on the Høltø farm. In America, his surname became Nilson, or variations of that, and was based on his father being named Nils. Hallstein’s children who immigrated to America adopted the Hilson, Hillson, or Helson name as their surname.

Halstein was widowed on 17 August 1887, when his wife Ingerid passed away at about 89-years old.

Hallstein Nilson died on 29 Dec 1891 in Westfield, Dodge, Minnesota. He was 95-years old at the time of his death. He was buried on 02 Jan 1892 at First Lutheran Cemetery in Dodge, Minnesota.
