Frederick A Helmut Aschbrenner (1874-1968)
Frederick A Helmut Aschbrenner was born on 03 Aug 1874 in the Town of Berlin, Marathon, Wisconsin as the third child of Frederick Wilhelm Aschbrenner and Bertha Auguste Henriette Kluender. He had eleven siblings, namely: Heinrich Frederick Franz, Carl Albert Emil, Otto Emil Valentine, Martha Anna Mathilda, Edward Albert Reinhart, Bertha Hulda Marie, Henry Herman Heinrich, Laura Amalia Henrietta, Frank George Wilhelm Bernard, Samuel Conrad George, and Hulda Amanda Alvina. Known as Fred, he grew up on the family farm and attended school through seventh grade.
When he was 28, Fred married Alice Rosalie Fehlhaber, daughter of Carl F. Fehlhaber and Emilie Friedericke Luise Draeger, on 26 Nov 1902 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church at the Town of Berlin, Marathon, Wisconsin.
Frederick A Helmut Aschbrenner and Alice Rosalie Fehlhaber had the following children:
- Selma Cornelia Aschbrenner was born on 07 May 1904 in Berlin, Marathon, Wisconsin. She was known as Sally. She married Norman Arthur August Krueger on 11 Nov 1933 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She died on 15 May 1983 in Wausau, Marathon, Wisconsin.
- Frederick Carl Aschbrenner was born on 25 Jan 1909 in Wausau, Marathon, Wisconsin. He married Sadie H. Heise on 26 Sep 1931 in Wausau, Marathon, Wisconsin. He died on 11 Feb 1936 in Wausau, Marathon, Wisconsin.
In 1902, Fred took over the home farm from his parents. This farm had originally been homesteaded by his grandparents. Fred was active in local affairs, serving on the Town of Berlin School Board. He and Alice raised their two children on the farm but sent their daughter, Sally, to Wausau to attend high school. The family was devastated in 1936 when their only son, Freddy, died as a result of complications from appendicitis. Without a son to take over the farm, Fred and Alice moved into the town of Wausau.
Their lives took another turn when their daughter was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Sally required a lot of assistance. She was was unable to care for herself and her young family. Sally, her husband Norman, and their two boys, moved in with the elder Aschbrenners. It was difficult having three generations under one roof, but it did allow them to pass down some of their German heritage and knowledge of the extended Aschbrenner family to their grandsons.
The Kruegers lived with the Aschbrenners from the time their oldest son was in kindergarten until he was in high school. At that time, Sally had a remission of sorts, and was able to take care of her family in her own home. Fred was in his late 70s by the time he and Alice had their house at 703 Werle Avenue to themselves.
