Carl F. Fehlhaber (1845-1922)

Carl F. Fehlhaber was born on 11 Feb 1845 in Posen, Prussia, Germany, as the fifth child of Carl Friedrich Fehlhaber and Ernestine-Caroline Neuman. He had five siblings, namely: August, Ottelie Emilie, Herman, William F., and Augusta.

Carl’s youth was spent in Prossekel, Kreis Filehne, which was then in the Posen part of Prussia. The area is now a part of Poland. The town of Prossekel is now called Przesieki.

When he was 11-years old, his parents moved the family from their native town of Prosekel, across the Atlantic ocean, to America. They sailed from Bremen on the Shakespeare as “between deck” passengers. They landed in New York on 20 Aug 1856. From New York, the family made their way to Wisconsin.

The family arrived in Wisconsin late in the fall and found a house to rent for the winter. Carl’s dad bought some land. In the spring of 1857, the family moved to their new home at the Town of Berlin, near Wausau, in Marathon County, Wisconsin. As a 12-year old, it is hard to imagine how life would have been for Carl moving to untamed land, helping his dad clear land and build shelter. Until their rough shed-like cabin was built, he probably slept under the stars with his father and older brothers, while his mother and sisters slept in the covered wagon. Did he find it exciting? An adventure? Or, was he miserable and whiny? Did he have to do hard work, or because he was the youngest son, did he have fewer responsibilities?

When he was 27, Carl F. Fehlhaber married Emilie Friedericke Luise Draeger, daughter of Gottfried Friederick Draeger and Joanna Friedericke Streich, on 21 May 1872 in the Town of Maine, Marathon, Wisconsin.
