John Loverin (1762-1843)

It has been written that the most interesting parts of a person’s life were the parts that fell in the “-” between their dates on a tombstone. John Loverin, like a lot of our ancestors, didn’t leave us a lot of clues to what went on in his life. There is likely much, much, much more to know than what is documented below. Maybe someday more of the story will reveal itself, but for now, we celebrate him by reviewing what we do know about his life.

Birth

254 years ago, John Loverin was born on 07 Apr 1762 in Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire as the first child of Lydia and Ebenezer Lovering. He had five younger siblings, namely: Ebenezer, Caleb, Polly, Lydia, and Hittey.

John Loverin was baptized on 11 Apr 1762 in Exeter, Rockingham, New Hampshire. In 1780 he resided in Protectworth, Cheshire, New Hampshire.

When he was 24, John married Betty Hall, daughter of Edward Hall and Lydia Brown, on 16 Jun 1786 in Croydon, Cheshire, New Hampshire. John Loverin and Betty Hall had the following children:

  • Eunice Loverin was born on 23 May 1787 in Protectworth, Springfield, Sullivan, New Hampshire. She died on 23 Mar 1793 in New Hampshire.
  • Aehsa Loverin was born on 03 Dec 1788 in Protectworth, Springfield, Sullivan, New Hampshire. She married John Barton in 1807. She died on 25 Mar 1885 in Springfield, Sullivan, New Hampshire.
  • Kimbell Loverin was born on 30 Aug 1790 in Protectworth, Springfield, Sullivan, New Hampshire. He married Mary Hayes in 1813. He died 14 May 1878 at Croydon, Sullivan, New Hampshire.
  • Mary Loverin was born on 01 Feb 1792 in Croydon, Cheshire, New Hampshire, USA. She married Adam Boyce on 02 Mar 1819 in Croydon, Sullivan, New Hampshire (then Cheshire county). She died on 01 Jan 1884 in Aurora, Kane, Illinois.
  • Caleb Loverin was born on 17 Feb 1794 in New Hampshire, USA. He died on 29 Jun 1795.
  • Betty Loverin was born on 11 Jan 1796 in New Hampshire, USA. She married Simon Ames in 1814. She died on 29 Oct 1895 in Croydon, Sullivan, New Hampshire, USA.
  • Eunice Loverin was born on 03 Mar 1799 in New Hampshire. She married Josiah Ide about 1825. She died 31 January 1890 at Croydon, Sullivan, New Hampshire.
  • Hannah Hall Loverin was born on 21 Jun 1801 in Croydon, Cheshire, New Hampshire. She died on 05 Jul 1879. She married George Watson in 1823.
  • Lydia Hall Loverin was born on 22 Oct 1805 in Croydon, Cheshire, New Hampshire. She married Abraham Sanborn Philbrick in 1830. She died in Jun 1875 in New Hampshire.
  • John Caleb Loverin was born on 25 Aug 1808 in Croydon, Cheshire, New Hampshire. He married Harriet Paul in 1837. He died on 06 Nov 1865.
  • Loisa Jane Printice Loverin was born on 09 Sep 1811 in Croydon, Cheshire, New Hampshire. She married Asa Abell in 1835. She died 16 March 1879 and was buried at Boardman Cemetery, Whitehall, Washington, New York.

Residences

John Loverin was counted in the census in 1790 in Protectworth, Cheshire, New Hampshire and then in Croydon, Cheshire, New Hampshire in the 1800, 1810, 1820 censuses. John Loverin didn’t move, but his county changed. In the 1830 and 1840 Federal censuses he was in Croydon, Sullivan, New Hampshire. The area that now is Sullivan County was part of Cheshire County from 1771 to 5 July 1827.

Death

John Loverin died of dropsy on 23 Sep 1843 in Croydon, Sullivan, New Hampshire, at age 81. It was said that he “died a wealthy farmer.”¹ He was buried at Four Corners Cemetery, Croydon, Sullivan, New Hampshire.
