In America, after spending their first winter elsewhere in Wisconsin, the family settled on previously unsettled land at the Town of Berlin, Marathon, Wisconsin. There was nothing there when they first came to their homestead. Until the first birch-bark roofed rough shed was built, the women slept in a canvas covered wagon and the men slept in a brush tent. The family brought a cow with them, so had fresh dairy products from the start. The next spring, the Fehlhabers brought the first sheep to the area.

Ernestine-Caroline Neuman Fehlhaber died on 23 Jul 1873 near the Town of Berlin, Marathon, Wisconsin at age 61. She was buried there in the Friedenshain Cemetery.
